Rio Vista CARE
Family Resource Center
2007 - 2008 Program Summary
SCHOOL BASED SERVICES
Pals is a mentoring program in which trained adult volunteers are paired with children who benefit from one-on-one interaction with a caring, dependable adult. Children are referred by school staff or parents. This support helps boost the child's self-esteem and increases his or her chance of success in school.
Pals receive training and supervision from a CARE therapist and meet weekly with their assigned student at DH White Elementary or Riverview Middle School. (Pals do not provide counseling.)
8 students were mentored by a Pal.
Crisis intervention and counseling services are provided by CARE therapists for students at D.H. White, Isleton, Riverview and Rio Vista High schools. The therapists work collaboratively with school staff, parents, CPS and law enforcement to provide comprehensive services to students.
Counseling services address such issues as use of alcohol and other drugs, fighting and violence, grief and loss, social isolation, neglect and abuse, harmful sexual behavior, self-mutilation, suicidal ideation or attempts, lack of parental support, eating disorders, symptoms of depression and anxiety and other challenges that diminish students' ability to learn in school.
104 students participated in counseling. 902 counseling sessions were held.
19 of these students received crisis interventions due to the risk of suicide or self-harm.
20 were referred by or reported to Child Protective Services (CPS)
41% of CARE's middle school clients and 62% of the high school clients had experimented with or are currently using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.
